Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) has filed a wide-ranging antitrust suit against Intel Corp., accusing it of maintaining its monopoly in the PC processor market by illegally coercing customers around the world into using its products, AMD said.

Japan's trade watchdog, the Fair Trade Commission (JFTC), suspects Intel Corp.'s Japanese unit broke local antitrust regulations by offering incentives to major PC makers to limit their usage of processors from Intel's rivals, it said Tuesday.

U.S. District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly Friday approved most of the provisions of a settlement deal between Microsoft Corp. and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and nine states that sued the software maker in a landmark antitrust lawsuit. In doing so, she brushed aside harsher remedies proposed by nine states that had refused to sign on to the agreement.
