Samsung cyberattack reveals U.S. customer data

South Korean technology giant Samsung has confirmed a cyberattack on the company’s systems that led to unauthorized access to some customer data in the U.S.

Although it remains unclear how many customers were affected by the breach, Samsung said the breach allowed hackers to access certain data such as names, contact and demographic information, date of birth and product registration data.

“In late July 2022, an unauthorized third party acquired information from some of Samsung’s U.S. systems. On or around August 4, 2022, we determined through our ongoing investigation that personal information of certain customers was affected,” the company said in a statement.

Samsung said the breach had no impact on users’ social security numbers or credit and debit card numbers, and that the amount of information leaked to each customer varied.

The tech giant is urging customers to be wary of potential social engineering attempts and avoid clicking on links or operating attachments from unknown senders. Customers are also warned to check their accounts for potentially suspicious activity.

While customers were informed of the breach, Samsung has also taken decisive steps to secure the affected system and hire an external cybersecurity firm to lead the response efforts.
