Microsoft announced that Russian-backed hacking group Nobelium has attacked the global IT supply chain of 140 managed service providers (MSPs) and cloud service providers, infringing at least 14 since May 2021.
Although the main targets of this series of attacks are resellers and technology service providers in the provision and management of cloud services, the report shows that Nobelium hackers used a diverse and ever-changing toolkit that includes a long list of tools and tactics.
Tactics included malware, password spraying and token theft, as well as API abuse and spear phishing to compromise large amounts of targets by breaching their service provider.
According to Tom Burt, corporate vice president at Microsoft, more than 600 Microsoft customers were attacked thousands of times, although the success rate was very low.
After detecting the attacks, Microsoft notified affected targets and added the detection of their products to protect against threats.
