OpenInfra Foundation has reported significant growth in open-source cloud computing platform OpenStack for 2022, despite predictions of its demise.
According to OpenInfra, there were 40 million OpenStack cores in production last year, a 60 per cent increase from 2021. These installations varied from 100 to 10,000 cores and accounted for 56 per cent of all deployments, with over 300 cloud data centers worldwide.
Despite its expansion, OpenStack still faces obstacles. According to a recent Flexera research, it is presently employed by just 12 per cent of organizations, trailing competitors like as Microsoft Azure Stack, AWS Outposts, and VMware vSphere.
In response, vendors at the OpenInfra Summit announced activities targeted at improving OpenStack usability. For example, Red Hat has announced the imminent release of a new version of its Red Hat OpenStack Platform, which will include enhancements to infrastructure management, security, and edge computing capabilities.
Canonical also announced Project Sunbeam, a free expansion of its commercial OpenStack platform aimed at small-scale cloud installations. OpenInfra itself also announced the formation of regional centers in Asia and Europe to address the growing demand for OpenStack in these regions while also providing continued support for the project’s growth.
