Imagine, no more fumbling with the USB connector to make sure you are plugging it in the right way. Well the USB 3.0 Type-C connector, which was originally intended for USB 3.1 and 2.0 devices, has been completely redesigned with that in mind, according to the USB 3.0 Promoter Group.
The latest version of the USB connector will accept the plug either way, according to the group. Just like Apple’s Lightning connector used in the iPhone 5, the new USB Type-C plug and socket will fit either way.
The new connector will also work well with emerging products and scale for future USB bus performance, according to the group whose members include, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Microsoft, Texas Instruments and Renesas Electronics.
The new connector will be similar in size to the USB 2.0 Micro-B plug found in new cellphone. It will support scalable power charging and will deliver data and video across all devices without the need of another connector.
The group said the Type-C connector will be the foundation of future versions of the USB and will enable a new “super thin class” of devices.
Unfortunately, this means the new connector will not work with existing USB plugs.
