The latest version of Micrsosoft’s flagship database has in-memory capabilities across all data workloads.
SQL Server 2014, released Tuesday, delivers “breakthrough performance for applications in throughput and latency,” Quentin Clark president of the company’s data platform group, said in a blog.
“Our relational database in SQL Server has been handling data warehouse workloads in the terabytes to petabyte scale using in-memory columnar data management. Microsoft executives talked about SQL Server at a customer event in San Francisco, where CEO Satya Nadella also announced the availability of the Analytics Platform System (APS), which combines SQL Server and Hadoop technology to offer what Microsoft calls “big data in a box.”
They also talked about the upcoming Windows Azure Intelligent Systems Service, a cloud service that captures and manages machine-generated data from sensors and devices connected to the Internet.
Microsoft also said that it has broken two records in TPC- H10 Terabyte and 3 TB benchmarks for non-clustered configurations in data warehouses using the new database running on HP servers:
–In the 10TB category, running on an HP ProLiant DL580 Gen8 Server and SQL Server 2014 Enterprise Edition the configuration handled 404,005 query-per-hour (QphH) topping the previously held record from Oracle/SPARC of 377,594 (QphH), Micrsoft said.
–In the 3 TB category the same configuration achieved 461,837 query-per-hour (QphH) topping the previously held record from Oracle/SPARC of 409,721 (QphH), Microsoft said.
The TCP-H Benchmark test is a suite of business-oriented ad-hoc queries and concurrent data modifications.
Among the new capabilities in SQL Server 2014 include a wizard that helps administrators move from on-premise to Windows Azure cloud service, a buffer-pool extension to solid state hard drives for faster paging and improved security including beefed up encryption.
