Meta, Microsoft, and other tech giants with a strong interest in the metaverse have formed a group to foster development of industry standards. The goal is to ensure that companies’ digital worlds are compatible.
Technology companies that are already part of the Metaverse Standards Forum range from chip manufacturers to gaming companies, as well as established standards-setting bodies such as the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
Tech companies that are not on the panel, at least for now, are Apple, the games companies Roblox and Niantic, and emerging crypto-based metaverse platforms such as The Sandbox and Decentraland.
According to Neil Trevett, an executive at the chipmaker Nvidia and Chairman of the Metaverse Standards Forum, the panel is trying to facilitate communication between a variety of standards organizations and companies in order to achieve “real-world interoperability” in the metaverse.
Trevett also stated that any interested company is welcome to join the group including participants from the crypto world.
