Dell fabric switch, SDN controller to help users automate cloud

Dell Inc. has released a new fabric switch and controller for software-defined networking (SDN) which the company said will enable businesses to scale and automate cloud environments.

The Dell Z9500 Layer 2/3 switch is a fixed form factor device. It is designed for 10G/40G aggregation in data centres and LAN cores. The gear has 10Tbps of throughput.

The Z9500’s port densities are 528 10G and 132 40G. It has five times the density per RU and half the latency of its predecessor the Z9000, according to Dell.

Businesses have licensing options that scale in incremental growths of 40G from 36 to 84 ports up to 132 ports. According to Dell this will be ideal for operations with small data centres that are looking to increase capacity down the line.

The Z9500 will be available in April with a selling price starting at $136,000

Dell’s Active Fabric Controller runs on X86 servers. It is for configuring and deploying networking functionality in the cloud and everything-as-a-service (XaaS) environments.

Dell is aiming Active Fabric Controller at enterprise SDN and OpenStack deployments. It will be available in the second quarter of 2014.
