Bernalillo County in New Mexico and Crawford County in Arkansas are both struggling with the effects of ransomware attacks.
The attack in Bernalillo County occurred on January 5 between midnight and 5:30 a.m. The attack in Crawford County was discovered on December 27 in the County Assessors office.
After the attack, New Mexico’s Bernalillo County took affected systems offline and cut network connections.
Most of the county’s buildings are now closed to the public. Emergency services are still available and 911 is still operating. Bernalillo County said it is working with vendors to respond to the incident.
In his statement on the attack, Crawford County Judge Dennis Gilstrap said cybersecurity experts have been contacted for advice on how to deal with the attack.
Gilstrap said operations returned to normal at both the tax accessor office and tax collector office on Tuesday. However, it will take weeks to verify if personal information was accessed by the attackers.
