China’s Industry Minister said in an interview Sunday that it will continue its strict regulation of the Internet sector, including eliminating processes such as blocking Web site links by competing platforms and ensuring that smaller players have room to develop.
China launched a sweeping regulatory campaign this year to rein in its massive and unchecked online economy, led by giants Alibaba Group Ltd, Tencent Holdings Ltd. and others.
Last July, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology launched a six-month regulatory campaign to address issues such as market disruption, violation of users’ rights, threats to data security and bombarding users with pop-up windows that could not be closed.
The blocking of rivals’ links had been tackled, while unclosable pop-ups had largely been removed.
