A cyber group called Anonymous Sudan, which is also behind Microsoft’s Office outage last month, has claimed to have taken down Reddit and Archive of Our Own.
Cyberint, a cybersecurity company, detected the statement published by Anonymous Sudan on its Telegram channel. The group said that it had targeted Reddit’s subpages, taking them down for two hours. Archive of Our Own, a website for fan fiction, was also reportedly taken down.
The scope of the attack is unknown, but Anonymous Sudan previously claimed on its Telegram channel that it had pilfered 30 million Microsoft customer accounts and had them for sale to the highest bidder on the dark web. The group placed a $50,000 price tag on the alleged trove of Microsoft data. They also provided a small subset of the database (about 100 email and password combinations) as proof of their claim.
Cyberint was alerted to the imminent threat by the statement released by Anonymous Sudan on their Telegram channel. The group also asserted that they had successfully conducted a test attack on the U.S. Electronic Federal Tax Payment System’s (EFTPS) website, leading to its temporary shutdown.
Reddit users have not reported any significant disruptions or abnormalities in the platform’s functionality. It seems that the attack had minimal impact on Reddit itself.
