Until
recently, Canadian businesses have been slow to adopt SIP trunking, preferring
instead to connect to the PSTN over traditional phone lines. However, the past
few years have seen an explosion in SIP adoption, as businesses realize the
limitations of traditional telephony and the benefits of converging data and
voice onto a single network.

Frost
& Sullivan’s 2011 Investment Decisions in Communications and Collaboration
Products and Services study revealed that North American SIP adoption is
expected to grow from 7 million users in 2010 to 59 million by 2017.

According
to the same study, one third of Canadian enterprise businesses were either
using or piloting SIP trunking in 2010, as compared to 47% of businesses
outside of Canada.
