Primus Telecommunications Canada Inc. announced this week it will offer six conferencing phones from Polycom Inc. to customers of Primus’s hosted PBX service.
Hosted private branch exchange (PBX) is similar in concept to Centrex service, in that the carrier manages the call routing and the customer can ask the provider to add or remove users. However, Primus says hosted PBX has additional advantages, such as IP communications, Internet connectivity, mobile services and the choice of having one network carrying both voice and data.
Primus customers cam now have Polycom Soundstation phones with their hosted PBX service, Primus said.
The SoundStation IP 7000, for example, is an IP phone for conference rooms with a microphone said to be capable of picking up voices from seven metres away. Using session intiation protocol (SIP), PolyCom says, the SoundStation IP 7000 works with telecommunications equipment from other vendors, such as Adtran Inc. NetVanta, NEC Sphere Communications Inc. Sphericall and Digium Inc. Asterisk.
In addition to reselling voice services from facilities-based carriers and offering voice over IP, Primus Canada also sells hosted server and managed services.
