Atria Networks LP, which provides wide-area networking in Ontario along hydro rights of way, is expanding its reach into Haliburton County, roughly 200 km northeast of Toronto.
Markham, Ont.-based Atria announced this week it has acquired the telecommunications network assets of Xittel Telecommunications Inc. of Trois Rivieres, Quebec. The companies did not publish the purchase price.
Atria provides voice and data services using a network of fibre cabling, most of it along power transmission lines. The five-year-old firm got its start when FibreTech Wired and FibreWired – based in Waterloo and Guelph respectively – merged. Both firms were the telecommunications divisions of their respective municipal power utilities.
Its other acquisitions include Hydro Ottawa Holding Inc.; Halton Hills Fibre Optics Inc.; FibreWired Hamilton; and Simcoe Community Broadband Network. It did not buy Toronto Hydro Telecom, which was acquired by Cogeco Cable Inc. and re-named Cogeco Data Services. Like Cogeco Data Services, Atria's flagship customers are the local school boards.
In addition to its wide-area network service, Atria also provides co-location and off-site backup.
