The bilingual financial co-operative Caisse Populaires du Manitoba has selected security appliances from Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Fortinet to protect its multi-platform member and employee networks, according to a Fortinet press release.
Seventy-two per cent of small and mid-sized banks plan to increase security software spending and 59 per cent plan to increase security hardware spending this year, according to IT research firm Info-Tech Research Group. This investment in security technology is being fuelled by a focus on privacy issues, transaction security and regulatory compliance, says the London, Ont. firm.
In the last six months of 2004, Symantec Corp. detected 10,310 new phishing attacks, with an average of nearly 400 new attacks per week where victims are encouraged to divulge personal information or unknowingly place malicious code on their computers. During this period the number of phishing attempts being blocked by Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam antifraud filters rose from nine million phishing attempts per week in early July to 33 million messages per week by the end of December.
