Citing recent economic turbulence as justification for its actions, xwave, a division of Aliant Inc. announced Friday it is slashing another 87 people from its already-reduced workforce.
Since October, xwave has reportedly given pink slips to 188 employees, current layoffs included, yet it maintains that it will remain one of Canada’s largest IT companies serving clients in telecom, energy and select areas of the public sector.
“While some industry experts predict moderate improvement in the next 12 months, we do not expect it will have a significant impact,” said xwave President and COO Rod Wark in a statement. “[We] adjusted our business model over the past quarter to ensure we are structured more cost-effectively and profitably.”
Despite a shrinking roster, the company has enjoyed much success since its inception in 1998, and most recently garnered praise for client information system (CIS) designed for the Province of New Brunswick’s Department of Public Safety.
The offender-related system connects New Brunswick’s community and correctional services with other provincial and federal justice-related organizations. CIS supports jail management, community-based corrections, victim services, and features a case-management system that aids in the reintegration of offenders back into society. The innovation was acclaimed at the 2002 Canadian Information Productivity Awards (CIPA), the largest business-awards program in Canada in the field of information management.
