Women Taking Their Place in the Boardroom

Kudos to Xerox Canada. Fully two-thirds of the company’s board members are women, according to the 1998 Corporate Women Directors International Report: Women Board Directors in the Top Canadian Companies. And that puts Xerox Canada at the top of the list.

The report identifies women directors serving on corporate boards of the top 200 Canadian companies, based on Financial Post ranking by revenues. The report also covers the top 100 financial institutions ranked by assets. The CWDI is a program of the Global Summit of Women.

General Motors Canada and Ford Canada, both companies headed by women, have the next highest percentage representation by women on their boards, with 44 percent and 33 percent respectively.

Other industrial and service companies on the top 10 list include Avenor Inc. (now Bowater Pulp & Paper Canada Inc.), IBM Canada Inc., Sears Canada Inc., Nova Scotia Power Inc., Dylex Ltd., Chevron Canada Resources, Chevron Canada Ltd., and Southland Canada Inc.

Among financial institutions, the two with the highest number of women directors are Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (6 out of 32) and Credit Union Central of British Columbia (6 out of 15). Vancouver City Savings Credit Union has the highest percentage of female board members (50 percent).
