Ottawa, Ont.-based Spotwave Wireless has released the SpotCell 100, which, according to the company, eliminates poor wireless reception in buildings. Available now, the SpotCell 100 complements existing networks and provides coverage of up to 20,000 square feet inside a building. According to the company, the SpotCell 100 is easily installed and continually optimizes output based on the concept of an ever-changing environment. Because of the adaptive technology, it eliminates the need for ongoing monitoring and reconfiguration, the company said. Features include a one-hour installation time without the need for test equipment or special tools, full A and B band selectivity and a reduction of cell phone output power.
SAMSys Technologies Inc. of Richmond Hill, Ont., has allied with Waterloo, Ont.-based Research In Motion Ltd. Under the agreement, SAMSys will introduce RIM’s BlackBerry wireless device into its own solutions and will integrate RIM’s chipset into SAMSys’s standard wireless modem communication medium. SAMSys produces radio frequency identification (RFID) readers that collect data and pass it on as a conduit to a server. In keeping with our forward-looking and innovative approach to RFID system functionality, we believe that adding wireless communication capability to a network of our readers represents the next generation of functionality we must address,” said SAMSys Chairman/CEO Cliff Horwitz. Brampton, Ont.-based Nortel Networks announced a $300 million contract with Dallas-based VoiceStream Wireless in September, which will see VoiceStream buy Nortel global system for mobile communications (GSM) radio and switching equipment. Nortel will provide radio base station equipment, switching and professional services for the VoiceStream Wireless network, which provides voice and data services. VoiceStream will deploy the equipment in Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio; and Rochester, N.Y. and Buffalo, N.Y. by the first quarter of 2002. Nortel is on the Web at www.nortelnetworks.com.
