What A CIO Should Know: WSJ explores CIO woes

The Wall Street Journal last month published an article called “Why CIOs are last among equals” by Peter S. Delisi, Dennis Moberg and Ronald Danielson that looks at the treatment of chief information officers as second-class citizens by other senior executives.

PA Consulting and Harvey Nash Associates’ “State of the CIO” global survey shows pay decreases and budget cuts have become a fact of life in many organizations. CIO Insights has a slideshow to illustrate the research highlights.

The third-annual B.C. CIO Executive Summit will take place at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver on June 15 and include speakers from Enmax, Royal Bank and ATB Financial, as well as a keynote from Intel’s CISO.

The Canadian IT Manager blog recently featured an interview with Jon Bartol, CIO of General Motors of Canada, who discussed his role and the key challenges facing the automaker from a business and technology perspective.

Micro Focus survey of 250 CIOs and IT decision makers in U.K. companies of 1,000 employees or more found that reducing the bottom line still remains the top priority for 43 per cent of IT departments there.

Intel recruited its own CIO, Diane Bryant, to make its case for refreshing corporate PC fleets more often in a presentation that was delivered before the annual CeBIT conference in Europe.

The CATA Alliance last month held its 25th annual Innovation Awards gala in Ottawa and announced Sasktel’s John Hill as its CIO of the Year. The award is sponsored by consulting firm KPMG.

HMG Strategy will be hosting a CIO Executive Leadership Roundtable featuring speakers from Proctor & Gamble Canada and several others at the Westin Harbour Castle, Toronto, on June 17.
