If you own a Samsung Galaxy S III, you’re probably showing it off to all your friends — the big screen, the fancy photo tricks. But according to this report clicking on certain links can cause big trouble for this unit and several other in the Samsung lineup.
It’s reported that a USSD code — used by handsets to send data back and forth to carriers — can be trigged by a malicious Web site and cause the handset to reset to factory defaults. In other words, a full wipe.
That’s not fatal to the handset, but it will mean you’d lose contacts, bookmarks and apps. You do back up that stuff, right?
OK. Three lessons: Backup, avoid clicking on unknown links and for the time being use the Chrome brower, which apparently isn’t vulnerable.
