LAS VEGAS – With updates to its OpenStack, Horizon and Workspace ONE products — in addition to a new endpoint management framework for managing Windows 10 in the enterprise — VMware Inc. is focused on an enterprise world where digital workspaces and mobile workers rule the day.
As client-server solutions make way for cloud computing and mobile apps, VMware officials on day two of its VMworld 2016 conference outlined how its digital workspace offerings can help aggregate services, applications and devices across a unified common access and identity framework.
VMware Integrated OpenStack 3
With the idea of helping enterprises along in their digital transformation journey, VMware also introduced VMware Integrated OpenStack 3 and new features to enable users to leverage existing VMware vSphere workloads within an API-driven OpenStack cloud architecture.
According to VMware, enterprises are embracing cloud computing to help speed application development lifecycles and make better business decisions.
In an interview with IT World Canada, VMware’s senior vice president and general manager for its cloud management unit Ajay Singh reiterated that VMware Integrated OpenStack represents a resource efficient and cost-effective method to help IT departments deliver an OpenStack cloud quickly and effectively in production environments.
Windows 10
The company’s unified endpoint management for Windows 10 solution includes configuration management and provisioning, software distribution, operating system (OS) patch management and client health and security management — integrating PC lifecycle management with modern enterprise mobility management (EMM) to help reduce the expanse of managing secure data and data across networks.
Organizations are thus better equipped to deploy security patches and OS updates faster, install software more reliably and consolidate operational processes across all Windows 10 devices — on or off the domain, according to the company.
Horizon 7
Updates to VMware’s desktop virtualization solution, Horizon 7, enables enhanced access to personalized desktops and applications via a digital workspace.
Additional functionality includes updates to the VMware Blast Extreme protocol to deliver increased performance, according to the company, with up to a 6x reduction in image bandwidth consumption and a 15 percent reduction in audio streaming to organizations running virtual Windows applications and desktops. An expanding list of Blast-enabled devices will include new validated thin and zero clients from Dell, HP and iGEL, along with the technology preview of support for Raspberry Pi.
Workspace ONE
Updates to VMware Workspace ONE include automated provisioning for Office 365 — enabling admins to automatically provision and de-provision end users based on existing active directory group membership — along with a new “consumer-simple” registration workflow that eliminates the need for end-users to download and register a two-factor authentication (2FA) application. When employees leave an organization, access to cloud-based Office 365 resources is immediately revoked through entitlement management, for example.
VMware Horizon and VMware Workspace ONE with VMware Identity Manager updates are expected this quarter, the company said.
