Verizon inks US$1-billion deal with Nortel

Verizon Wireless Inc. announced on Wednesday that it has signed a multi-year deal with Nortel Networks Corp., which will allow the wireless communication providers to upgrade its equipment and allow for a new third generation (3G) voice and data network.

With the billion dollar deal, Verizon Wireless – owned by parent company Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group PLC – plans to deploy and upgrade certain wireless infrastructure equipment including code division multiple access 2000 (CDMA2000) 1X radio base stations, switching, and Passport Internet Protocol (IP) platforms, according to the companies.

This deal will give Verizon additional network capacity allowing it to provide services including Web browsing, streaming audio and virtual private networking.

Nortel Network’s solutions will also support Verizon Wireless’ attack of the hot spot market by offering Wi-Fi or 802.11b service.

Verizon is targeting American markets including those in San Diego, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Detroit, Atlanta and Cleveland as well as new markets such as Myrtle Beach, S.C. Nortel Networks had already provided wireless equipment for its CDMA2000 1X to Verizon Wireless earlier this year in Georgia and Alabama.
