No longer content to view the enterprise from behind the consumer market fence, Symantec Corp. is trying to forge a new reputation as the Internet security vendor of choice for large corporations.
Best known for its Norton Utilities suite, the Cupertino, Calif.-based company has spent the last year building up its enterprise arsenal, beginning with the acquisition of Intel Corp.’s security business. The build-up continues unabated, including the recent purchase of the Hampton, Va.-based URLabs. URLabs technology includes IGear software, which monitors Internet access.
Then last month, Symantec announced plans to roll its Internet tools division into a new, independent company. Although a firm decision has not been made, Symantec could recreate the division as a partly-owned subsidiary. This would affect, among other products, the Visual Caf
