Sun details UltraSPARC efforts

Sun Microsystems Inc. unveiled its new Sun Blade workstations and Sun Fire servers, that feature the company’s UltraSPARC III processor, on Wednesday at its Net Effect event in New York.

The Sun Blade 1000 workstation has twice the performance of Sun’s current high-end workstation, Sun said in a statement. The systems are available in 750MHz and 900MHz configurations, with prices starting at less than US$10,000.

Sun also announced the new Sun Fire 280R workgroup server, which is rack-mountable and can run up to two 750MHz UltraSPARC processors. According to Sun, the server can scale from 162G bytes to 5.2T bytes of storage. Pricing for the product was not immediately available.
