Statistics Canada has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), which aims to streamline data from the telecommunications industry.
Over 900 companies are surveyed annually by the CRTC and Statistics Canada to get a snapshot of the Canadian teleco industry and its related sectors including long distance, Internet and broadband services.
CRTC chairman Konrad von Finckenstein said in a statement that this collaboration will reduce the regulatory burden on the industry and “create efficiencies in the collection of statistics by the federal government.”
Statistics Canada and the CRTC had conducted these surveys separately in the past. Stating this year companies will only be required to fill out one annual telecommunications survey and submit to the CRTC’s Web-based data collection system.
The information will then be shared with Statistics Canada while adhering to information protection safeguards.
