Sierra Wireless module reaches Japan

Vancouver-based Sierra Wireless announced Thursday it will integrate its new MC8780 PCI Express Mini Card into NEC Corp.’s LaVie G Type J series notebooks.

The MC8780 module will support NTT DoCoMo Inc.’s HSDPA network in Japan, making it the first consumer product from Tokyo-based NEC to offer embedded HSDPA connectivity. NTT DoCoMo is the largest phone operator in Japan.

The module also offers tri-band UMTS/HSPA and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE network access to enable roaming on mobile broadband networks around the world. Sierra Wireless said that teaming up with NEC to provide mobile broadband connectivity to NTT DoCoMo’s flat-rate data plan will be extremely attractive to the Japanese market.
