Siemens AG, in cooperation with Cingular Wireless Inc., will introduce a triple-band GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) cellular phone in the U.S. market in March, Siemens said Tuesday in a news release.
The German electronics giant’s mobile information and communications group (IC Mobile) and Cingular, the joint venture between SBC Communications and BellSouth Corp., plan to launch the Siemens S40, which will represent Siemens’ entry into the U.S. mobile telephone market.
The S40 is the first triple-band cellular phone produced by Siemens. The Siemens S40 operates at 900MHz and 1800MHz in Europe and Asia, and at 1900MHz in the U.S. The S40 also offers Internet surfing and high-speed data transfer functions, according to the release, which did not provide pricing information.
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission approved the SBC Communications and BellSouth joint venture in October. Cingular serves 19 million customers in 38 states.
