A virtual laboratory built by four Ontario academic institutions received a favourable ranking in November as one of the world’s most powerful computer systems.
The High Performance Computing Virtual Laboratory (HPCVL) currently ranks at 196 on the “TOP500” list of the world’s fastest supercomputer sites, which also makes it the top ranked site in Canada. The HPCVL is the result of a collaborative effort between Carleton University, University of Ottawa, Queen’s University and Royal Military College of Canada.
“HPCVL has grown quickly to become the premier research high performance computing centre in Canada,” said Ken Edgecombe, the executive director of the virtual lab. “HPCVL is enabling research excellence and growth in emerging scientific and technological areas important to Canada’s economy. We are delivering world class high performance computing capability to Canadian researchers who are developing innovations with global significance.”
The “TOP500” list has been compiled semi-annually since 1993 to facilitate the establishment of collaborations, provide a better understanding of the high performance computer market, and the exchange of data and software.
