SAP’s near-line storage solution targets big data woes

With the rapid pace of stored data growth, many enterprise companies are facing a big data storage issue that is straining IT budgets.

Stored data is growing at a rate of about 35 per cent each year, according to Aberdeen Group. This is causing many IT departments to double their storage capacity every 24 to 30 months and spend an average of 13 per cent of their budget on storage, the research said.

German enterprise software maker SAP AG, is proposing to help companies reduce their costs of storing data by offering a rapid-deployment solution that enables transparent access to historical data for reporting and query capabilities.

SAP (NYSE: SAP) today introduced its NetWeaver BW Near-line Storage solution. The company said the product can cut storage cost by enabling quick transfers of data between the business warehouse and the near-line storage that holds important historical data.

Near-line storage is a type of data storage that represents a compromise between online storage (used for data that needs to be accessed quickly) and offline storage (used for back-ups, infrequently accessed data and long-term storage).

Near-line storage allows the reduction of database size which results in faster online systems performance.

NetWeaver can help businesses reduce their maintenance efforts and system downtimes with the use of a leaner business warehouse where the company’s historical data resides in near-line storage making the information readily accessible when needed, according to SAP.

“Businesses would originally have to wait to report on historical data via the business warehouse, but with the data in near-line storage that historical data is quickly at hand,” a SAP statement said.

“By implementing NetWeaver BW, customers can experience faster online querying through a reduced amount of data in the business warehouse and its proximity to SAP Sybase IQ,” said Dr. Bernd Welz, executive vice president for solution and knowledge packaging, at SAP,” Businesses can now work with archived data on an as-needed basis with the same agility they have come to expect with live data.”

NetWeaver BW is powered by SAP’s HANA in-memory database platform. Customers can reduce their total ownership of SAP HANA for NetWeaver BW when they use it to optimize data storage strategies and keep only current requirements for online data stored on HANA while moving historical data to near-line storage where it remains safe and secure with SAP Sybase IQ.
