Red Hat’s sfotware collections to support Ruby, Python

The beta release of Red Hat’s Software Collections 1.0 will allow developers to use newer versions of languages such Ruby and Python.

Software Collections 1.0 is the first in a series of releases meant to enable developers to use the new capabilities of Web apps fasters and with the support of Red Hat, the company said. The company said a major version of Software Collection will be released every 18 months and its life cycle will be three years.

The beta includes access to the versions of Ruby 1.9.3 with Rail 3.2.8; Python 2.7 and 3.3; Python 2.7 and 3.3; PHP 5.4; and Perl 5.16.3.

It is available for use with RHEL 6 to customers using the appropriate RHEL, Workstation or developer-related subscriptions. They are functionally complete and intended for production use.

Software Collections 1.0 also includes access to MariaDB version 5.5 MySQL version 5.5 and Postage SQL version 9.2. It will not replace the default tools provided with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.

Software Collections will serve as a parallel set of optional tools.
