Reducing complexity

Juniper Networks has announced new Ethernet Services products the company claims will reduce the cost and complexity for service providers deploying and migrating legacy networks and services to Ethernet. A modular system allows the cards to be added incrementally and non-disruptively to existing M- and T-series routing platforms. The interface card portfolio consists of four cards designed to give service providers more flexibility. It includes a four-port Gigabit Ethernet card supporting up to 4:1 oversubscription, an eight-port Gigabit Ethernet card supporting up to 2:1 oversubscription, an eight-port Gigabit Ethernet card supporting line rate performance on all interfaces and a single-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet Type card supporting line rate performance.

AquaLogic line updated

On the one-year anniversary of the product’s release, BEA Systems has announced upgrades to three of its AquaLogic line of SOA offerings. AquaLogic Service Registry 2.1, the company’s governance tool, has been updated with a more intuitive GUI to give users improved search capabilities and the approval submission process has been streamlined. AquaLogic Enterprise Security 2.2, designed as the foundation for customers to leverage a common application security infrastructure across the enterprise, can now be integrated with AquaLogic Service Bus and WebLogic Platform 9.X. And also new is AquaLogic Service Bus 2.5, an Enterprise-class Service Bus designed for connecting, mediating and managing interactions between heterogeneous services. Updates include governance support for re-use and operational control and ESB federation for scalable, flexible ESB deployments.

IBM adds Web 2.0 features to forms technology

IBM has released the next version of its electronic forms technology, adding support for new Web programming methods and established forms standards. With Workplace Forms 2.6, IBM is introducing a new roles-based design tool built on the Eclipse framework that can be configured for designing forms, developing business rules or linking to back-end systems. Users can plug in reusable components as a way to snap together form templates and back-end services. IBM has also upgraded its Forms Server with support for AJAX and the W3C standard XForms. The Forms Server, which is part of the Workplace Forms platform that includes a viewer and the Eclipse design tools, includes both the Web Form and form deployment capabilities along with a set of APIs.

Tackling enterprise spyware

WebRoot has added kernel-level driver protection in Spy Sweeper Enterprise 3.0, the new release of its enterprise class anti-spyware product. The company said the application has been completely rearchitected to offer kernel-level driver protection to detect and remove the most malicious types of spyware, including rootkits and other evolving malware. Other enhancements include the ability to scan compressed files and configurable SNMP alerts for detected spyware at the conclusion of sweeps.

McAfee Falcon now in beta

McAfee Inc. has released a beta version of its next-generation antivirus software, code-named Falcon. With Falcon, McAfee has redesigned two of its existing products — VirusScan and Internet Security Suite — and is introducing two offerings: PC Protection Plus and Total Protection. The products, which are expected to ship by September, all include a new user interface as well as the SiteAdvisor Web site-rating software that McAfee acquired earlier this year.

Oki Data Americas has introduced the C3400n digital colour printer with a focus on improving performance for the SMB and home office market. The C3400n delivers speeds of up to 16 pages per minute in colour and 20 ppm in black-and-white, and features OKI Printing Solutions’ new high-definition colour technology, which combines microfine toner and multilevel LED printing for improved image quality on regular office paper. HP revamps blade server line

Hewlett-Packard has unveiled the next generation of its blade server systems, which add improved management capabilities and technologies from its NonStop fault-tolerant line. The new product line is the result of a three-year development effort that stemmed from HP’s expectations that users will increasingly rely on blade technologies. The HP BladeSystem c-Class technology will replace the p-Class blade, HP said. The company said it will continue to produce the latter blades through 2007 and will support them through 2012.The HP c-Class chassis can hold 16 server and storage blades; its p-Class predecessor supports 12 blades, HP said. The new management features include improved integration with other servers, storage that allows virtualization and management from one environment, and LCD screens for monitoring the system.

Inter-Tel bolsters Linux-based IP PBX

Inter-Tel has announced a Linux-based IP PBX with multimedia support, presence and other advanced communications features to help users perform their jobs more efficiently. The Inter-Tel 7000 is a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)-based IP PBX that can support as many as 2,000 IP phones, as well as analogue handsets, via a built-in gateway. The phone system includes built-in multimedia messaging applications based on SIP that could improve user productivity with features such as unified-messaging options and integrated instant messaging and presence technology, according to Inter-Tel. The Inter-Tel 7000 includes two appliances: a call-processing server, which has SIP-based call control and features; and a media server, which includes presence IM and unified voice mail and e-mail applications.

Bell brings Samsung a900 to Canada

Bell Canada has teamed with Samsung Electronics Canada to bring the a900 EVDO-enabled mobile phone to Canada. The half-inch thick, Bluetooth-enabled flip-phone runs on Bell’s wireless EVDO data network and features a 1.3 megapixel camera with flash and camcorder, streaming video capability and a built-in MP3 player with stereo speakers. It offers up to 2.75 hours of continuous talk time and seven days of standby in EVDO.

NetApp enters SMB storage market with new array

Network Appliance has announced its entry into the small and midsize business market, with a storage array designed to work in network-attached, iSCSI and Fibre Channel environments. The StoreVault S500 has features typically found in high-end storage systems. It has as much as 6TB of storage capacity, features Windows-based configuration software and includes built-in data-protection software that lets as many as 250 snapshots of data to be taken. The product also features Network Appliance’s RAID Double Parity, which is used to recover data if more than one disk fails at a time. The S500 supports the Microsoft iSCSI initiator and QLogic’s Simple SAN initiative, which uses QLogic host bus adapters to connect Windows servers to the SAN.

Xandros adds Windows migration tools

Xandros has released version 4.0 of its Debian-based desktop operating system, a year and a half after the last update, adding the ability to read and write to NTFS partitions and migrate settings from Windows. Two consumer-oriented editions of the OS, Xandros Desktop Home Edition and Xandros Desktop Home Edition Premium, were released, with a business-oriented version scheduled for September. The OS is based on the “Sarge” edition of Debian. Two of the most prominent additions are NTFS partition handling and Windows migration tools. The NTFS features are courtesy of Paragon Software Group, whose “NTFS for Linux” product ships with Xandros 4. The upcoming professional edition will add support for features such as Active Directory, symmetric multiprocessing and hyperthreading. It will include the Xandros Desktop Management Server for centralized deployment and administration.

Fujitsu notebooks balance customer demands

Fujitsu Computer Systems has launched an ultralight, 2.2-pound notebook that the company said balances the conflicting demands of business people. The LifeBook Q2010 notebook is three-quarters of an inch thick and uses a docking station to play CDs. Also new is Fujitsu’s LifeBook T4210 Tablet PC, a notebook with a touch-screen that pivots to either the right or the left, and a stylus that also serves as an eraser. The Q2010 has a 12.1-inch screen, Intel Core Solo processor, biometric fingerprint sensor, and accelerometer to protect data by freezing the hard drive heads when it senses an impact. The T4210 has an Intel Core Duo processor, 12.1-inch display and a modular bay that supports the user’s choice of either an optical drive or an additional battery.
