Roberto Medrano has parlayed a simple call from a corporate headhunter in 1995 into a highly successful career as an Internet security expert. The call was in regards to a position with Ottawa startup Milky Way Networks, which developed firewall technology. Despite a self-admitted lack of knowledge about firewalls, Medrano accepted the position with the firm and learned firewalls on the fly. It soon became apparent that Medrano had found his niche, as he shortly thereafter found himself in the president’s chair at Finjan Software, a developer of Java security products.
Today, Medrano is general manager of Hewlett-Packard’s Internet Security Solutions division. Last year, he was selected to be a participant in former U.S. President Bill Clinton’s White House meeting on cyber security. He recently talked with Network World Canada Editor Greg Enright about the hottest issues surrounding Internet security.
