Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. unveiled its first Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) cellular telephone, which features a built-in digital still camera function. The SPH-X590 was launched last month in Tokyo, and operates on CDMA2000 1x networks. The phone features enough memory to store up to 100 images, and offers a 100,000 pixel class charge-coupled device (CCD) pick-up at the swivel point between the screen and the phone’s main body. The camera function can swivel through 180 degrees and offers 20 different aperture settings. The telephone includes a 40-chord polyphonic ring tone and colour thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT LCD), which can display 10 lines of text while in normal operation and 12 lines while being used for wireless Internet browsing. The telephone is already available in South Korea for approximately 500,000 won (US$385), but the company has not yet revealed any plans to sell the product in North America. Samsung also said it plans to release a new model this month, which will feature a videophone camera with a CCD pick-up that swivels through 360 degrees.
