The Food Marketing Institute, an association of 2,300 retail and wholesale food suppliers, early this year announced the establishment of an Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAC) to funnel information to the government about threats to the nation’s food supply. The creation of the Food Industry ISAC is the seventh such centre established between the private sector and the National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC), the cyber warning arm of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations. However, it is the first that will also work closely with the FBI’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Operations Unit to identify and report nuclear, chemical or biological threats to the nation’s food supply.
