NEC Corp. will shortly begin sample shipments of a new Plasma Display Panel (PDP) that features higher luminance and contrast than previous models, IDG News Service has learned.
The panel, which will be officially unveiled on Thursday, is a wide screen model with a diagonal width of 50 inches (127 cm), capable of a resolution up to 1,365 x 768 pixels (WXGA), according to sources at the company. Contrast has been increased to 50:1 in the new screen, and peak luminance is 80 per cent higher, at 450 candelas per square metre (cd/m2).
The new panel will be offered to other electronics companies on an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) basis to build into their own products.
PDPs are being increasingly employed as large-size monitors for public displays and wall-hanging television sets – applications for which it is impractical or impossible to build liquid crystal displays (LCDs) of the size required.
