Motorola to lay off 4,000 employees around the world

Motorola is under pressure to return itself to profitability after years of bad returns, narrowing its focus to high-end devices like the new Motorola Atrix. Two thirds of the cuts Motorola is making will be outside of the United States. In Canada, the company maintains an office in Markham, Ontario. It’s unclear at the moment how many Canadian jobs will be affected.

UPDATE:  Jennifer Weyrauch-Erickson, a spokeswoman for Motorola, wrote in an e-mail message that she could not confirm the number of employees to be laid off in Canada, saying the company was “not breaking down the number by country.”
