Microsoft clearer on WinRT, Phone8 management

When a software company offers manufacturers of IT devices multiple platforms, it makes sense: After all, a desktop operating system can’t run a smart phone. However, it causes device management problems for corporate IT administrators.

That’s what happened after Microsoft Corp. left IT managers in the dark about how its latest platforms — Windows RT for tablets and PCs running ARM processors, and Windows Phone 8 — are to be managed. But according to this post from Cnet, a blog from Microsoft has partly cleared this up.

(Upcoming Microsoft Surface tablets like this will run Windows RT or Windows 8)

The next versions of Microsoft InTune, it’s cloud-based Windows device management system, and System Center 2012 Configuration Manager, the on-premise management, will work together to offer administrators  a single console, the blog says.

This will be good news for administrators, who doubtless aren’t happy with the prospect of facing a new platform (WinRT). However, the Cnet story does note there are details still to come, and pricing hasn’t been settled.
