Summer’s here at last and doubtless you’re busy planning your vacation or camping trip, or your next social gathering on the backyard patio. With another miserable winter in the books, your mind may be focused on sunny days and barbecue grills overflowing with burgers, but should you also be thinking about security? Chances are it’s not top of mind right now. But perhaps it should be.
Hackers don’t really take vacations. Certainly when you consider the ubiquity of malware, spyware, ransomware, and other cyber threats, you get the impression that hackers have their noses pressed to the grindstone 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and hazy, lazy days be damned.
Would it surprise you that, according to a recent study, Canadian organizations are attacked in varying degrees of severity more than 450 times per year, with almost 90 per cent suffering at least one successful breach? A separate study from the UK revealed that two-thirds of the biggest companies in Great Britain suffered a cyberattack or data breath in 2015.
Let’s make no mistake about it: cyber-crime is not getting better but worse — this according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. As an organization, you must always — even when summer is in full bloom — be on your guard, protecting your employees, your clients and customers, and your critical data.
Summertime should be a happy and relaxing time — a time to get out more and enjoy all that life has on offer. But who says you can’t take care of a little business (security being pressing business indeed) while you’re enjoying your summer?
