Letters: Canadian technology not highlighted enough

I received with great interest the October 5th issue of Computer World Canada from a colleague. I was excited to see an article, “It’s A Canadian Thing” (by Victoria Berry, pg. 24) since we are Canada’s oldest Geomatics companies, specializing in GIS software. As the marketing manager I would have thought that any interview or request for information would have gone through my division, but would have been happy to see our company’s presence, even if it had not. After reading the article, I was left confused, to say the least.

CARIS, a true Canadian company, founded by a former professor from UNB was no where to be found. We are the only Canadian GIS software company in existence today, and we were not mentioned. Instead, I see that ESRI Canada was. ESRI is a U.S.-owned and originated company. While it is true that ESRI has an office in Canada, the fact remains that the technology is American.

Over and above these facts, UNB is world renowned for its experience and expertise in Geomatics. The world looks to UNB, its professors and students to lead the way in many fronts of Geomatics. Dr. Masry, the president and CEO of CARIS, has certainly great vision and insight into the industry and the history behind the Canadian technology.

I am truly disappointed that an article, which could have significantly instilled pride in all Canadians who read it, will only suggest to those of us who know the GIS industry, that American technology is what you have promoted! Perhaps you should have chosen a different title for your article. Heather-Anne MacLean
