LatAm server shipments drop, revenue rises in 2001

Latin American companies bought more high-end servers in 2001 than in 2000, leading to an increase in revenue generated from server sales in the region, according to a Dataquest Inc. study released Monday. But despite the revenue hike, overall server unit shipments fell.

Server revenue in Latin America reached US$1.8 billion in 2001, a 5.1 per cent increase over 2000. IBM Corp. grabbed 40.1 per cent of the revenue to finish with the biggest market share. Compaq Computer Corp. came in a distant second with 14.6 per cent, closely followed by Hewlett-Packard Co. with 14.2 per cent.

The vendor that posted the biggest revenue increase in 2001 was Sun Microsystems Inc., with 16.5 per cent growth. It came in fourth in revenue market share.

Total shipments fell 2.4 per cent to 176,006 in 2001, compared with 2000. Compaq finished first with 22.9 per cent of the units, followed by IBM with 15.9 per cent and HP with 9.1 per cent.

Dell Computer Corp. posted the biggest growth in shipments with a 61.6 per cent increase in 2001 over 2000. Dell had the fourth-highest shipment market share.
