LAND5 storage

Network storage vendor LAND-5 introduced two network-attached storage appliances last week for midsize to large workgroups in large corporate networks. The InstaNAS and StoragePod Plus are devices that have data capacities of 72 gigabytes to nearly 650 gigabytes. Both storage appliances feature 10/100 Ethernet connections to the network and contain extra PCI slots for the addition of external storage. The InstaNAS and StoragePod Plus also feature a Web-browser-based configuration and management utility. They run a proprietary operating system developed by LAND-5. The InstaNAS is 1 7/8-inches high and features two 36G-byte drives. It includes a bay for a tape backup and one PCI slot for an additional Gigabit Ethernet or Fibre Channel adapter. The InstaNAS is based on the Intel Pentium III processor and operates at 650 MHz to 800 MHz. The StoragePod Plus is a 10 1/2-inch high rack-mounted device that contains 6 PCI slots for multiple connections to the LAN or Fibre Channel devices. It is built on an Intel Pentium III and is expandable up to 2G bytes of RAM. It can handle up to 18 36G-byte drives. It also includes a connection for adding external tape backup capability. The InstaNAS starts at $4,500 for 650MHz device with two 9G-byte drives and 256M bytes of RAM. It is available next month. The StoragePod Plus starts at $12,000 and will be available next month.
