Juniper Networks Inc. claims its SRX 3400 and 3600 network gateways, launched Monday, let administrators set security policies once for each user on multiple devices such as intrusion prevention systems, firewalls and virtual private networks.
In developing the SRX 3000 series, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based network equipment manufacturer took its 5000 series, announced last September, and “basically shrunk it,” said Brian Lazear, director for product management at Juniper’s High-End Security Systems Business Unit.

The SRX 3600 has 12 slots and can support up to 30 Gbps of traffic on a firewall, up to 10 Gbps on a VPN and 10 Gbps on an intrusion prevention system. The SRX 3400 supports up to 20 Gbps on a firewall, 6 Gbps on a VPN and 6 Gbps on an intrusion prevention system.
They are designed to help administrators set policies based on users and applications instead of IP addresses and ports, said Sanjay Beri, Juniper’s vice-president of access solutions. “They don’t have to worry about going to each box and setting up many different policies depending on the device,” he said in an interview with Network World Canada.
Although the gateways are designed for use in data centres, corporate networks and service provider networks, Juniper is targetting the security requirements of branch offices, telecommuters and outsourcing partners. In these scenarios, many workers access data centres through VPNs protected by secure sockets layer technology, or SSL VPNs, Beri said.
