IT World Canada wins online publishing awards

Editors and experts from across the country have recognized IT World Canada for its excellence in developling online media, digital editions and news coverage as part of the third annual Canadian Online Publishing Awards.

Presented by Masthead Magazine, the COPAs recognize consumer, B2B and other publications for the work they do on the Internet and through social media.

IT World Canada won the Gold Award for Best Cross-Platform Initiative for the CIO Canada Brainstorm Centre, a portal that allows chief information officers to edit wiki pages filled with answers to provocative questions about IT management such as “CIOs can contribute to innovation in their organization by . . . ” and others. The category is intended to recognize an initiative deemed to offer the best re-purposing, re-packaging and/or extension of a feature from a related print or broadcast product.

Gold honours also went to the CIO Canada special digital edition on cloud computing. Published in May, the publication integrated a video inteview as part of its cover, included links to cloud-related commentary from our annual ComputerWorld Canada Blogging Idol competition and a built-in assessment-style quiz.

IT World Canada’s portal focused on the small and medium-sized business (SMB) segment, ITBusiness.ca, tied for the Gold award for Best Online-Only publication, for a site “deemed to best serve the needs of its target audience through content, design and use of the Web medium,” according to the COPA Web site. This year also marks ITBusiness.ca’s 10-year anniversary and the second time it has won this award.

“We love what we do,” said Shane Schick, editor-in-chief of IT World Canada. “We are storytellers first and foremost, and the Web has opened up amazing possibilities to tell stories in multiple ways and in collaboration with our audience. This is a victory for everyone on our staff.”

ITWorldCanada.com also won Silver honours for Best News Coverage.
