iPhone apps – taking care of business?

Many developers continue to bemoan the limited development potential for the iPhone that restricts them to creating Web apps running within Safari (Apple’s Web browser included on the device).

This limitation – they say – impedes their ability to create effective and meaningful business apps for the iPhone. They made this argument when the “no third-party native apps for iPhone” announcement was made by Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, in June. And many continue to make it.

On the other hand, some software vendors are trying to make the best of (what at first blush appeared to be) a rather shoddy deal. The fact that Web-based apps only can be developed for the device is not a limitation, says this group, but a strength, because of the innate capabilities of the Safari browser.

And over the past few weeks, some vendors have announced a range of enterprise apps targeted at the device.
