Intel Corp. on Thursday will unveil its new “Internet on a chip” processor for mobile phones, according to the chip manufacturer.
Intel, based in Santa Clara, Calif., said the chip – code-named “Manitoba” – features ARM-based Xscale processor core technology, flash memory and an on-chip digital signal processor (DSP).
Manitoba will be targeted for use in mobile devices – specifically cell phone and “smart” phones – that are compatible with high-speed wireless networks, including GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and GSM (Global System for Mobile communications).
The chip should enable mobile device vendors to reduce power consumption and extend battery life, Intel said, and boost development of advanced handset features such as small Java applets, wireless Internet access and playing audio files.
