For the second time in as many months, Intel Corp. Monday reduced the prices for some models of its processor line, with the price of desktop Pentium 4 processors and some Xeon processors being cut by as much as 21 per cent.
The price cut affects 10 models of Intel’s Pentium 4 processor, with the steepest cuts – 21 per cent – coming for the 2.5GHz, 2.53GHz, 2.6GHz and 2.66GHz models. These chips are now priced at US$193, US$193, US$241 and US$241, respectively, according to the most recent price list for 1,000-unit quantities posted on Intel’s Web site.
The 2.2GHz and 2.26GHz chips as well as both versions of the 2.4GHz Pentium 4 processors, which employ either a 400MHz or 533MHz front-side bus, have all had their price reduced by 16 per cent to US$163. The smallest price reductions were reserved for the 2.8GHz Pentium 4, reduced by six per cent to US$375, and the 3.06GHz Pentium 4, cut by eight per cent to US$589.
On the server and workstation side, Intel has cut the prices on five models of its Xeon processor line. The 2.6GHz and 2.66GHz Xeons saw the sharpest price cut, dropping 16 per cent to US$273 and US$284 respectively. The price of the 2.4GHz Xeon with a 533MHz front-side bus dropped 11 per cent to US$209 while the prices for the 2.4GHz Xeon with a 400MHz front-side bus and the 2.2GHz Xeon were both reduced by 12 per cent to US$198.
The most recent price list also includes pricing for Intel’s 3.06GHz Xeon. The chip, which first appeared in Precision workstations put on sale by Dell Computer Corp. earlier this month, is priced at US$722, according to the most recent price list.
