SMC unveils multifunction device
SMC Networks Inc. recently announced a wireless device that can be used as an adapter, access point or repeater. The SMC Wireless Multi-Mode device installs without drivers and supports the Wireless Distribution System protocol, which lets it extend the range of a 2.4 GHz wireless network using a point-to-point or point-to-multipoint configuration. IBM adds Fibre Channel option
IBM Corp. last month announced an upgrade to its high-end TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server that offers Fibre Channel connections for its Peer to Peer Remote Copy disaster recovery software. TotalStorage formerly ran only on Escon connections, which are 30 per cent slower and as much as 50 per cent more expensive than the Fibre Channel connections, according to IBM. Most enhancements to TotalStorage will ship next month; all will be available by February. More information is available at www.ibm.com.
Sun spruces up server
Sun Microsystems Inc. recently offered a processor bump for its Sun Fire V480 server family. The company is now shipping its new 1.2GHz UltraSparc III processor in the high end four-way V480 model.The V480 comes in three configurations: a two-processor machine with 4GB of memory, a four-processor system with 8GB of memory, and a four-processor system with 16GB of memory. The faster processor will be available in the 16GB version. Pricing for that system remains unchanged at US$26,000.
