In a move to capture the attention of mobile enterprise customers, Research In Motion (RIM) on Wednesday announced it is offering IBM Corp.’s Lotus Instant Messaging (IM) Everyplace 3 application on its Java-based BlackBerry wireless handheld device.
The BlackBerry platform already supports wireless e-mail, phone, short message service (SMS), an organizer, and Web and intranet applications. The IM features now available on the BlackBerry include: chatting to one or more contacts; IM contact list access; IM, e-mail and SMS alerts; multilingual support; and single name password sign-in.
According to the company, IM has become more than just a convenient or social means to chat, and is now a mission critical application for many companies.
BlackBerry is supporting Lotus on the handheld device as well as the server. Both Lotus IM and the BlackBerry device support the Java 2 Platform Micro Edition (J2ME) mobile information device profile (MIDP) standard.
