Even though companies are deploying Web services conservatively in terms of both financial investment and number of projects, 88 per cent of these organizations agree the benefits of Web services will increase in the future, according to a recent survey by International Data Corp.
The report, entitled Shining the Light on Web Services Projects: Findings from IDC’s Web Services Investments Study, showed that most Web services projects being undertaken are geared towards solving one particular business or automated function that is specific to a company’s industry.
Sandra Rogers, research director for Web Services software at IDC in Framingham, Mass., said in a statement that businesses are deploying a wide range of Web services varying from pure integration to addressing industry-specific business-to-business (B2B) external processes.
Those who responded to the survey said they would continue to invest in software to support Web services initiatives, particularly in the area of security.
According to IDC the primary motive for deploying Web services was to reduce costs. Also, most businesses are in the early stages of adoption and tend to turn to internal resources to implement these solutions. IDC also found that companies are making incremental software and hardware spending outlays to support these projects.
