IBM Corp. has created a new product group and undertaken an internal restructuring that is intended to boost its PC division and make it simpler for customers to buy servers.
Robert Moffatt was named general manager of the new Personal and Printing Systems Group as part of the changes, which were announced internally last Friday, said spokesman Ray Gorman. Moffatt had been in charge of the Personal Systems Group.
Three divisions will report to Moffatt: Printing Systems, headed by Bill McCracken, Retail Store Solutions, headed by Tom Peterson, and Personal Computing, which is the new name for Moffatt’s former group and is now overseen by Jon Judge.
IBM also has moved its xSeries line of Intel Corp.-based servers from the PC division to its Server Group. Bill Colton, who had been vice president of development in the Personal Systems Group, has been named general manager of the xSeries line. He will report to Bill Zeitler, general manager of the Server Group.
The moves were made for a couple of reasons, Gorman said. The Personal Systems Group has been profitable for the last two quarters and wants to continue that trend and “we want to provide IBM customers with a more heterogeneous server lineup,” he said.
The company recently renamed all of its servers with an “e” tag, and except for the Intel-based machines all of its other servers were under the same group.
“This is the next logical step, getting those Intel-based servers into that group,” Gorman said.
